Week 2: Dem Bums split a 4 game set in the Windy City

8/21 - Wrigley Field
Seats vs Borowy
Dodgers 3, Cubs 0

After getting swept by the Redbirds Dem Bums travel west to face the boys from the north side of the Windy City.  With all of their arms suffering from exhaustion the Dodgers were forced into starting Tom Seats.  With expectations as low as their morale the Dodgers were more than pleasantly surprised when Seats turned in a complete game 4 hit shutout performance.  Augie Galan (2-5, 1 run / 1 RBI) and Luis Olmo (3-4, 1 RBI) wielded hot bats as the Brooks got off the schneid and posted their first win of the season.

8/22
Herring vs Prim
Dodgers 3, Cubs 0

Brooklyn followed the same recipe for success that helped them win the series opener.  Dem Bums tapped unheralded Art Herring to toe the rubber.  Herring one upped yesterday's hero (Tom Seats) by giving up 1 less hit while posting a second consecutive complete game shutout.  Goody Rosen (3-5) had a big day at the plate.  First time starters French Bordagaray (2-4) and Brown (2-4) each had a big RBI.  Luis Olmo, who is sporting a hot bat, managed to make 3 errors in the field, which Herring was able to easily overcome.

8/23
Gregg vs Wyse
Cubs 5, Dodgers 4

Until the bottom of the 7th this contest looked like a mirror image of the 1st two until Chicago busted out of their doldrums in a big way scoring 3 runs to cut Brooklyn's lead to 1.  For 24 consecutive innings Dodger hurlers shutout the Cubs before the breakout.  Pinch hitter Paul Gillespie stroked a big 2 run single with 1 out.  The Cubs would tie it up in the 8th thanks to a 2 out error by Dodger shortstop Basinski, who would boot another in the 9th to setup the game winning 2 out double by Phil Cavarretta.

8/24
Lombardi vs Passeau
Cubs 2, Dodgers 0

Turnabout is fair play.  After suffering through all of those scoreboard goose eggs it was Chicago's time to watch Brooklyn suffer.  A combination of Claude Passeau and Ed Vandenberg did more than enough to stymie Brooklyn's resurgent lineup.  The game remained scoreless until Chicago scored solo runs in both the 7th and 8th innings to split the series.  In the 7th a perfect squeeze bunt by pinch hitter Ed Sauer plated Stan Hack.  A sac fly by Andy Pafko in the 8th would make it 2-0, which was how it ended.
