This Week in WWII

As a regular feature Tom "Crash" Davis will alert us as to what was happening in the war.

August 19, 1944.  Allied Troops approach the Seine River.  The French resistance lead an uprising in Paris, anticipating a quick liberation. Hitler orders his generals to burn Paris to the ground. 

Jan Uluots, acting head of state of Estonia, in a radio broadcast to Estonian troops, calls for the troops to attack the Soviet Army and hold them out of Estonia until a separate peace with Nazi Germany can be achieved.

August 20  The Soviet Army launches a new offensive against Romania.

August 21  The Dumbarton Oaks Conference begins, laying the groundwork for the United Nations. 

August 22  Japanese forces are in total retreat from India.

Warsaw uprising continues into its third week.  Soviet troops sit outside oof Warsaw and refuse to aid the insurgents, acting on direct orders from Stalin.  The Uprising would last 63 days and lead to the deaths of between 150,000 and 200,000 Polish civilians
