Game 1 of a DH: Yankees spot starter Bill Zuber
shook off an early season injury to pitch 8 strong innings allowing only
3 hits and 1 run. He was backed by 3 hits and 2 RBIs by spark-plug
leadoff hitter Snuffy Stirnweiss who also turned a DP from his SS
position. 3B Billy Johnson also pitched in with 2 RBIs. Mel Harder was
the hardluck loser for the Indians. Yankees 4 Indians 1
The
Nitecap: Stirnweiss was given the game off and his sub Frank
Crosetti rewarded the Yanks by leading off the bottom of the 1st with
his 1st HR of the season. Nick Etten also added a HR as the Yanks grew a
5-1 lead that disappeared in the 5th as the Indians took advantage of
starter Marius Russo's wildness (7 BBs). The big blow for the Indians
was a 3-run HR by Jeff Heath. In the 7th Heath added a SF to give
Cleveland a 1-run lead. However, the Yankees answered in their half of
the 7th scoring two on a Double from Etten. Johnny Murphy and Jim
Turner kept the Indians scoreless to give the Yankees the doubleheader
sweep. The win was costly though. Stirnweiss, with a .351 OBP with 14
RBIs from the leadoff position, entered the 9th as a PH but was inured
and lost for the rest of the series. Yankees 7 Indians 6

3: The Yankees blow another big lead but this time can't come back.
Down 4-0, the Indians come all the way back in the 7th scoing 4 times
with the key hits by SS Lou Boudreau and Buddy Rosar. RP Mike Naymick
pitched 5 shutout IPs in relief to get the win. Indians 7 Yankees 5
Game
4: This one is no contest s Vern Kennedy throttles the Yankees hitters
and the Indians bats clubber Yankees
starter Hank Borowy and 3 relievers. Kennedy added 4 hits and 2 RBIs
of his own. Oris Hockett also had 4 hits while Jeff Heath, Boudreau,
Rosar, and Roy Cullenbine had 3 hits each. One of Cullenbine's hits
cleared the fences for a 3-run HR. Johnny Lindell spoiled Kennedy's
shutout with his 1st HR of the season, a 2-run blast. Indians18 Yankees
