Tigers move into 1st with sweep of Nats

Griffith Stadium
Sept. 10  First Game
Hal Newhouser -v- Johnny Niggeling

Newhouser and Niggeling locked up in a great pitcher's duel.  Neither team could muster any threats through 8 innings as each team waited for the other to blink.  Finally, in the top of the ninth, Niggleling blinked.  He loaded the bases and Bob Maier drove hoeme two.  Eddie Mayo followed with a two run double.  That was everything Prince Hal could ask for as he finished off the 'Nats in the bottom of the 9th for his 4th win and 2nd shutout of the season.  Tigers 4  Senators 0

Sept 10  Second Game
Stubby Overmire -v-  Bobo Newsome

Overmire had started twice this season with very poor results, famously giving up 18 hits in 6 innings against Philadelphia on August 21.  Here today, though was a different story.  Backed up by plenty of Tiger hitting, including a three rbi game for "Little" Eddie Mayo, Stubby was on his game.  He threw 9 innings, scattering 10 hits and walking none.  He won his second of the season and earned himself another start.  Two senators were thrown out at the plate in the 9th, one by Johnny Outlaw and the other by Roy Cullenbine.  Tigers 8 Senators 1

Sept 11
Dizzy Trout --v- Milo Candini

Milo Candini held the Tigers in check while his teammates beat up on Dizzy Trout who came
into the series leading the league in wins (tied with the Senators Dutch Leonard who the Tigers were fortunate enough to miss in this series).

Dizzy uncharacteristically gave up 5 walks and 11 hits in the first 6 innings leading to a senators -0 lead.  The Tigers put across two runs in the 7th  and Trout seemed to think he could win as he set down the Senators 1-2-3 in the 7th.  The Tigers picked up where they left off. , 5 more runs came across.  The Tigers added an insurance run in the 9th and Dizzy won his league leading 5th of the season.  Tigers 8  Senators 5

Sept 12
Joe Orrell -v- Mickey Haeffner

Hank Greenberg had his only hit of the series with a run scoring triple in the first.  Although Orrell walked 5 in his 7 innings of work, he only gave up 2 hits.  George Caster finished the game, but did not earn a save as the Tigers pummeled the Senators 9-3, sweeping the series.
