GAME 1
Butcher vs Borowy
Pirates 4, Cubs 1
The Bucs broke a scoreless tie
with 3 runs in the top of the 7th off of Hank Borowy. Back to back to back RBI knocks from Bob
Elliott (triple), Frank Zak (single) and Camelli (double) did the damage. The Cubbies answered back with 1 in the
bottom of the inning, but their bats went cold the rest of the way. Babe Dahlgren (3-4) scored twice to pace the Buc offense.
GAME 2
Roe vs Signer
Pirates 6, Cubs 4
It took 12 frames for the Bucs to
put away the “swooning” Cubbies.
Pittsburgh jumped out to a 4-0 lead after 2, but to their credit the
Northsiders rallied back with 2 in the 8th and 1 in the 9th
to tie it. In the top of the 12th
Johnny Barrett tripled home Ostermueller to put the visiting squad up by
1. A sac fly by Pete Coscarart gave reliever Cuccurullo a nice 2 run
cushion to finish off Chicago.
GAME 3
Strincevich vs Wyse
Pirates 3, Cubs 1
Solo runs in the 2nd,
4th and 8th were more than enough for hurler Nick Strincevich to protect. Johnny “the thief” Barrett pilfered two more
bases to up his season total to a Cobb-like 41.
Dahlgren continued to wield a hot stick going 2 for 4. Vinny DiMagio hit his 3rd
roundtripper and upped his average to .290.
GAME 4
Sewell vs Passeau
Pirates 4, Cubs 2
Pittsburgh finished off their
sweep of the Cubbies to clinch sole possession of 2nd place in the
NL. Rip Sewell (4-3, 4.14) went the
distance giving up just 2 runs on 6 hits.
“The Thief”, Johnny Barrett
stole an incredible 5 more bases thanks to his 3-4 showing with the
lumber. Bill Nicholson’s 2 run shot
accounted for all of Chicago’s runs.
