Bombers turn up the heat on Motown

The Yankees and Tigers play a 4 game series with 3 of the 4 games being game of the year candidates.

September 19:  The Tigers Hal Newhouser and the Yanks Hank Borowy put on a pitching clinic.  Newhouser was the only one to blink, allowing a solo homerun to New York slugger Charlie Keller in the 4th for the games only run.  The Tigers touched Borowy for 4 hits while Newhouser allowed only 3.  Yankees 1 Tigers 0

September 20: It looks like the Yankees are headed to a big first inning but speedy leadoff hitter Snuffy Stirnweiss is thrown out at the plate by Hank Greenberg.  The Yankees never again threaten to score while grounding into 2 DPs.  In the 5th Doc Cramer slugged his 2nd homerun of the year and Tigers starter Dizzy Trout matched Borowy by throwing a CG 1-0 shutout.  Spud Chandler went 9 allowing only 5 hits in the loss.  Tigers 1 Yankees 0

September 21:  Until tiring in the 9th and allowing a run, Bombers starter Tiny Bonham almost matched Borowy and Trout.  However, this one wasn't close.  The Yankees scored 3 in the 2nd and RF Bud Metheny drove in his 1st 3 runs of the season and went 2-2 with 2 doubles.  Yankees 7 Tigers 1

September 22:  The series finale was all about the hitters.  The Tigers took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the 6 with Hank Greenberg blasting his 4th homerun.  The Yankees loaded the bases off Stubby Overmire.  Yankees clean-up hitter Keller then stepped to the plate and blasted a Gran Slam homerun to put New York on top.  The Tigers though came right back and chased Yanks starter Butch Wensloff in the top of the 7th with a 2 spot to tie the game.  It stayed that way until the 9th when the Tigers pushed across a run to take a lead.  The Yankees though came right back and tied the game on a single by PH Ken Sears with the runner Nick Etten just beating the throw home.  After the Tigers were retired in the 10th, Joe Gordon gave the Yankees the series win with a solo homerun, his 4th.  Yankees 6 Tigers 5
